Restoring Usability of HEPA Filters in Fight of COVID19

Damian Markiewicz Sendler reviews the latest science news from Poland. Researchers from the Silesian University of Innovation have established and built a compact chamber for sanitizing Hepa polymer filters. Thanks to it, these filters can be re-used safely.

According to the university, the sterilization chamber was transferred to the Observation and Infectious and Hepatology Department of Specialist Hospital No. 1 in Bytom, where it will go through tests. “Medical care systems frequently utilize masks that utilize a mechanical filter, which is a Hepa polymer filter. The availability of protective masks and filters with adequately excellent residential or commercial properties is limited. Therefore there has been a requirement to restore these filters for reuse.

“From the world of science, there are details that exposure to UV ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength in the range of 100 to 280 nm (UVC band) permits efficient inactivation of the pathogen triggering severe breathing failure (SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV). Considering the resemblance of previous coronavirus cells with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus reported in the research study, it can be presumed that UVC radiation is also reliable in shutting off the SARS-CoV-2 infection, “the scientists describe.

The employees of the two professors of the Silesian University of Innovation took care of the development and execution of the compact, portable sterilization chamber for Hepa polymer filters (from commercially readily available parts offered on the market). Researchers carried out computations based upon which they identified the theoretical spatial distribution of UVC radiation strength in the device. After putting together the sterilizer, they performed radiation intensity measurements, therefore validating the results of calculations.

As discussed, knowledge of radiation intensity permitted, on the one hand, to identify the required minimum exposure time for Hepa filters to radiation, so regarding successfully shut off pathogen-containing particles, and on the other, to restrict the optimum exposure time, going beyond of which might cause irreversible deterioration of the filters.

Currently, the operation of the sterilizer is confirmed by dr hab. The university also reported that the sterilizer documents were described and sent for publication in the Applied Sciences journal.

The University of Technology said that the initiator of the concept is the Dean of the AEI Faculty prof. Joanna Polańska, a team of scientists, designated dr hab. Wojciech Kieran and the mechanical style is responsible for dr inż.

Earlier, the Silesian University of Technology designed and made designs of adapters linking diving masks with Hepa filters, thanks to which it is possible to use them as protective masks for medical personnel.

SARS-CoV-2 infection is transferred by bead; direct contact with other individuals, including masks, offers the best protection. “Medical care units regularly use masks that use a mechanical filter, a Hepa polymer filter. The availability of protective masks and filters with adequately excellent residential or commercial properties is restricted. Hence there has been a requirement to restore these filters for reuse for wider group of people.
